2025: A Perfect Square Year!
On our journey through the Pythagorean Table (see Correio do Minho, 12/12/2024), we observed that the table displayed regular patterns when analyzed using the elimination of the nine methods (modulo 9). Surely, you must have heard of the mathematical trick “Casting out Nines.”
This method works because, in the decimal system (base 10), there is a fundamental property:
10 ≡ 1 (mod 9).
This rule allows us to replace a number with the sum of its digits to determine the remainder when divided by 9. Modular arithmetic exposes intrinsic patterns within numbers, which are essential both in the elimination of nine methods and in the structure of the Pythagorean Table.
For example, as analyzed in “A Journey through the Pythagorean Table,” we identify predictable cycles in the values obtained by recursively reducing the results of multiplications. This reflects the periodic nature of modular arithmetic, which fascinated ancient mathematicians, including the Pythagoreans, who dedicated part of their studies to harmony and numerical relationships.
The Pythagoreans and Perfect Squares
The Pythagoreans saw a mystical beauty in mathematics and placed special value on perfect squares. These numbers result from the product of an integer by itself (n × n = n²).
In Greek mathematics, the term “perfect” describes objects or numbers that exhibit order and harmony. A perfect square is considered complete because it results from an exact and symmetrical operation (n × n) and possesses intrinsic mathematical elegance.
The Pythagorean school had a special interest in the perfection of numbers and used the term perfect to highlight the unique properties of these results.
Indeed, perfect squares exhibit remarkable characteristics:
- They always have an exact integer square root.
- They reveal specific patterns in the sum of their digits under modulo 9.
The adjective "perfect" underscores these exceptional qualities, highlighting the harmony and uniqueness that the Pythagoreans saw in numbers.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Year!
But today, we’re not here to talk about the Rule of Nine or to focus on the Pythagorean Table. We’ve already opened the doors for you to explore that intriguing world—just continue the journey!
Today, we want to tell you about something unique, memorable, beautiful, and extraordinary!
Something that most of us will have the privilege of experiencing only ONCE in a lifetime.
Rejoice! Celebrate!
We are about to live through a perfect square year!
Why? Because:
2025 = 45 × 45.
That is, 2025 is the square of 45.
Years (numbers) with this property are rare!
We last lived in a perfect square year in 1936 (44 × 44), and the next one in 2116 (46 × 46).
Although we wish all our readers a long life and good health, we suggest you celebrate this year in style.
Waiting until 2116 might be… a bit optimistic!
As Fernando Pessoa once said:
“It is the HOUR!” (Mensagem, "Nevoeiro").
Still with this mysterious mist in mind—and slightly twisting its meaning:
Today, we are not scattered; today, we are whole!
Just as 2025 is the result of squaring a whole number.
Let us celebrate this rare and mysterious event!
The Mystical Connection: 2025 and the Magic of 9
Among perfect square years, 2025 is particularly special because it is wrapped in the mystical symbolism of the number 9:
2 + 0 + 2 + 5 = 9.
But since 2025 = 45 × 45 = 45², using the method of recursive reduction, we obtain:
2 + 0 + 2 + 5 = (4 + 5) × (4 + 5).
Thus, 2025 = 9 × 9 = 81 → 8 + 1 = 9.
Nines out… nothing left!
But wait! We are not dealing with “A handful of nothing and another of emptiness,” as in Irene Lisboa’s famous book title.
Quite the opposite—just as that book is full of dreams and imagination, so too is mathematics filled with mysteries and revelations.
On the other hand, Saint-Exupéry, in The Little Prince (Chapter XXI), reminds us that:
"What is essential is invisible to the eye."
And even more poetically, Fernando Pessoa concluded:
“For the invisible is seen.” (Obra Édita, "Não: Não digas nada").
So, let no one think that nothing exists in the middle of nothing.
In reality, within nothing—or rather, within nothing under modulo 9—everything is found.
The connection between 2025 and the number 9 reveals that this year is more than just another date on the calendar.
In Pythagorean thought, the number 9 suggests harmony, transformation, and completeness.
Thus, beyond the potential for transformation and new beginnings that we attribute to each new year, 2025 seems to bring a hint of perfection, a subtle balance between the visible and the invisible.
But don’t spread this secret too much. Keep it close to your heart.
After all, the more distracted might not understand… and the essential, as we know, is reserved for those who can see beyond the obvious.
Perfect Squares, Geometry, and the Universe’s Harmony
Returning to perfect squares—for the Pythagoreans, these numbers symbolized harmony and perfection, both in geometry and in their relationship with right triangles.
In terms of harmony, perfect squares represent symmetry and balance, reflecting the underlying order of the universe.
In geometry, they are associated with the areas of squares whose sides have integer lengths, a fundamental concept in proofs like the Pythagorean Theorem.
Regarding right triangles—polygons with three sides and three angles, one of which is right (90º) and the other two acute (less than 90º)—the Pythagorean triples were studied.
These consist of sets of three whole numbers (a, b, c) that satisfy the mathematical relationship expressed in the Pythagorean Theorem:
a² + b² = c².
Examples of Pythagorean triples include:
- (3, 4, 5)
- (9, 40, 41)
- (11, 60, 61)
Curiously, (3, 4, 5) is the only triple formed with three consecutive numbers.
2025: A Year of Harmony and Transformation
Being a perfect square year, 2025 invites us to explore connections between numbers and geometry, rediscovering the intuition of the ancient Pythagoreans.
For them, mathematics was much more than numbers—it was a universal language and the key to unlocking the harmony of the cosmos.
Few symbols illustrate this harmony as powerfully as the five-pointed star, or pentagram, which the Pythagoreans adopted as a symbol of perfection and balance.
If we delve deeper into geometric intuition, the number 5, represented by the pentagram, contains a divine proportion—the golden ratio.
A Wish for 2025
May 2025 be an opportunity to celebrate the beauty and mystery around us.
Like the pentagram or a guiding star in the sky, 2025 reminds us that there is order and purpose in all things.
Let it be a year of balance, discovery, and transformation, just as the Pythagoreans envisioned in numbers and shapes—where every moment reflects the universal harmony they sought to understand.
